Green(er) Racing: Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 LMP1 Race Car

Just because you’re involved with racing doesn’t mean you don’t care about the environment and that’s the exact thinking behind the Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 LMP1 race car.  The car is powered by a diesel engine with an electric system, which is a better option than gasoline/electric system in my opinion.

The Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 race car is powered by a 3.7 liter V8 HDi FAP diesel engine that produces 550 horsepower and is mated to a 6-speed sequential hydraulic transmission.  The hybrid system provides an additional 80 horses (kW) and includes a KERS-type energy recovery system that provides 500 kJ of juice.  Unlike the KERS system, this system automatically sends power to the rear wheels during acceleration, without the need for pushing a button.

The 908 Hybrid4 can run in electric-only mode in the pit lane, giving it even better mileage.  The car will be present at the pre-LeMans testing on April 24th.  I’m looking forward to seeing this beautiful car in action at the 24 Hours of LeMans race; it should have a gas-mileage advantage over its competitor, as long as it doesn’t break down.

I've been writing about cars for the last 8 years, but I've loved everything with an engine since I was a kid. I'll take the sound of high revving naturally aspirated engine over music, any day! Favorite Car: Porsche Cayman GT4
