I (along with others) have complained about the conservative styling of the McLaren MP4-12C supercar but I don’t have any complaints about its brother, the MP4-12C GT3 race car.  This looks like a proper supercar with the addition of a few body elements; I can’t wait to see the results once all the major car tuning companies get their hands on some MP4-12C’s.

We first showed you a teaser picture of the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 race car last year, now McLaren have officially unveiled the car; the project is a collaboration between McLaren and CRS Racing.  The MP4-12C GT3 is powered by the same 3.8 liter turbocharged V8 engine that can be found in the street car but is has been tuned to meet racing specifications, McLaren hasn’t provided any details on the power output.

The all new racing bodywork includes a new front bumper with splitters, wider front fenders, new side skirts, an aggressive looking carbon fiber diffuser, and fixed carbon fiber rear spoiler.  The car uses a new race suspension with racing dampers and anti-roll bars, instead of the ProActive Chassis System.  The car is equipped with ABS braking system from Bosch Motorsports and uses Akebono callipers.

The McLaren MP4-12C GT3 will be tested at various FIA approved test tracks in the coming months and will be offered to private racing teams for the 2012 racing season.

I've been writing about cars for the last 8 years, but I've loved everything with an engine since I was a kid. I'll take the sound of high revving naturally aspirated engine over music, any day! Favorite Car: Porsche Cayman GT4
