The Not So New – All New 2012 Audi A6 Sedan

Audi officially released pictures and specs of the “All New” 2012 A6 sedan on December 1st.  There were a few “leaked” pictures floating around on the internet and all the so-called car sites were going all crazy over the car.  I don’t really get it, the “new” 2012 Audi A6 looks the same as the last generation A6, with a few minor changes and in fact it looks the same as the generation before that.  Are Audi designers just lazy or do they think we’re stupid?  Or are they trying to pull a “Porsche 911” on us?  I think the new Audi A6’s design is insulting and only true Audi fan-boys will be excited about it and notice the differences.

Anyways, my rant is over, on to the “new” 2012 Audi A6.  The A6 comes with three diesel and two gasoline engines and will be available with a hybrid version at a later date; these models will be available worldwide.

The most efficient model is the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder TDI engine that gets 48 miles per gallon (4.9 liters/100 km) and produces 174 horsepower (130 Kw) and 280 pound-feet (380 Nm) of torque.  The 2.0 TDI A6 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 142 mph (228 km/h).

The second diesel engine is a 3.0 liter V6 TDI that gets 45 mpg (5.2 L/100 km) and produces 201 hp (150 Kw) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.  The 3.0 TDI A6 is able to reach 62 mph in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h).  A more powerful version of this engine is available with 241 hp (180 Kw) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque and is able to get to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).  Average fuel consumption is 39 mpg (6.0 L/100 km).

The naturally aspirated gasoline 2.8 liter FSI V6 engine produces 201 hp (150 Kw) and 207 lb-ft (280 Nm) of torque, allowing the car to get a 0 – 62 mph time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h).  The 2.8 FSI A6 gets 31.79 mpg (7.4 L/100 km).

The most powerful engine offered on the 2012 Audi A6 is the turbocharged 3.0 TFSI V6 which produces 295 hp (220 Kw) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque.  The 0 – 62 mph is achieved in 5.5 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).  The 3.0 TFSI equipped A6’s get 26.7 mpg (8.2 L/100 km) combined.

The Audi A6 comes with many different transmission choices including a manual 6-speed transmission, multitronic CVT, and a 7-speed S tronic transmission.

The Audi A6 features a multitude of aluminum parts to keep its weight low; the 2.0 TDI weighs in at 3,472 pounds (1,575 kg).  The 2012 Audi A6 will go on sale in early 2011 and will be priced from €38,500 in Germany.

I've been writing about cars for the last 8 years, but I've loved everything with an engine since I was a kid. I'll take the sound of high revving naturally aspirated engine over music, any day! Favorite Car: Porsche Cayman GT4
