Official: 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK

2012-Mercedes-SLK

We already knew what the new for 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK hardtop convertible is going to look like thanks to the leaked French promotional video.  Today we get to look at the official pictures and specs provided by the Stuttgart based company.

The first thing you’ll notice on the SLK is the more upright front grill, kind of like the SLS AMG.  A lot of people complained about the styling of the previous generation as being too girly, maybe the new front fascia will take care of that?  I have read numerous comments online about the front being too truck-like, so the complaints will always be there.

The 2012 Mercedes SLK comes with some neat technology, such as the MAGIC SKY CONTROL panorama vario-roof is an option that tints and un-tints the glass roof at the touch of a button (demonstrated in the video below).  Buyers will have the option of buying a regular tin roof or glass roof without this feature.

The SLK will come in three trim levels; SLK 200, SLK 250, and SLK 350.  The 200 will not be available in North America and we expect an AMG version in the near future.  The SLK 200 comes with 184 horsepower and the SLK 250 with 204 hp; both of these cars are powered by 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engines and equipped with 7-speed automatic transmissions.  The SLK 200 reaches 62 mph in 7 seconds while the SLK 250 does the sprint in 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 147 mph (237 km/h).

The top of the line (for now) SLK 350 will be equipped with a 3.5 liter V6 engine that produces 306 horsepower and can get to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).  According to the promotional video, the SLKs are equipped with eco stop/start engine technology and consume 25% less fuel compared to the previous generation SLK roadsters.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK convertibles will go on sale in Germany on January 17th and in the U.S. in the summer.  The car will be officially launched at the company’s headquarters in late January to commemorate the company’s 125th anniversary and will make its public debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March.

Prices in Germany (including VAT):

SLK 200: €38,675

SLK 250: €44,256

SLK 350: €52,300

I've been writing about cars for the last 8 years, but I've loved everything with an engine since I was a kid. I'll take the sound of high revving naturally aspirated engine over music, any day! Favorite Car: Porsche Cayman GT4
