First Look – 2012 BMW 650i Convertible with Video

2012-BMW-650i-Convertible

I wasn’t a big fan of the last generation of the BMW 6-Series coupe and convertible, now BMW has released pictures and specs of the second generation 6 Series convertible and I must say I’m under-whelmed.  The 2012 BMW 6-Series Convertible looks very bland, especially in the front, the design already looks dated and I can’t image how bad this thing will look a few years from now.  BMW has been getting it wrong lately with their larger car designs, in my humble opinion.  This car should appeal to older people with its understated look.

Once you get past the initial design, the rest of the car isn’t too bad; the interior is acceptable and should be very comfortable.  The 650i convertible uses a soft cloth top that opens in 19 seconds and closes in 24 seconds and can open/close while moving at a speed of up to 25 miles per hour (40 km/h).  The convertible top is available in two colors, the standard black or a new beige color.

The BMW 650i Convertible is available in seven metallic and two non-metallic colors.  The US model offers Nappa leather for interior surfaces which can be ordered in four colors: Black, Ivory White, Cinnamon Brown, and Vermillion Red.  These leather surfaces can be ordered with contrasting stitching as an option.

The 2012 650i convertible is powered by a 4.4 liter V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet (610 Nm) of torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm range.  The V8 can be mated to a manual 6-speed transmission or BMW’s new 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission.  The 650i convertible goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour.

The 2012 BMW 650i Convertible is being built at a plant in Dingolfing, Germany and will go on sale in early part of 2011 as a 2012 model.  No word on prices yet which should be available early next year.

I've been writing about cars for the last 8 years, but I've loved everything with an engine since I was a kid. I'll take the sound of high revving naturally aspirated engine over music, any day! Favorite Car: Porsche Cayman GT4
